The supportive role HR can play
If your company has an HR department, an HR staff member should work with you to ensure a successful workplace transition. The HR representative should be able to tell you about the company’s policies regarding changing names on documents or credentials, and the availability of transition-related healthcare benefits. You can then develop a timeline for your transition, including your communication plan and any time out of the office you will require.
In my case, there were no policies related to healthcare benefits to discuss, since the company specifically excluded transgender healthcare from its benefits package. I had learned this when my surgeon’s office had tried to obtain approval from Anthem Blue Cross, which did cover these benefits for companies who chose to include them in their employee health coverage.
However, HR felt they might need to provide support to any employees who had questions or may be uncomfortable after I had announced my intention to transition, which I thought was a good idea. To the best of my knowledge, I never heard of anyone in the office who had any reason to talk with HR about my transition or complained about working with me. I attributed this positive environment to the way that I handled the initial communication roll-out and the efforts that I made to personally communicate my news as much as possible.
HR should also support you if you feel you are being harassed, particularly if someone in the office refuses to address you by your preferred gender identity. If it is deliberate, this is one of the most common forms of discrimination.
